Storyline
A Complete Unknown by James Mangold and Jay Cocks explores the early years of the well-known American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, following his transition from folk to electric music in the 1960s. The film is loosely inspired by Elijah Wald’s book Dylan Goes Electric!, which describes the circumstances leading up to Bob Dylan’s contentious electric performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
The film chronicles the journey of 19-year-old Bob Dylan through the thriving New York music scene of the early 1960s, starting with his humble origins as a folk performer in Minnesota and ending with his rapid rise to prominence.
The chorus of Bob Dylan’s 1965 hit song “Like a Rolling Stone” serves as the inspiration for the film’s title.
Box Office Success
The film was distributed in the United States by Searchlight Pictures on December 25, 2024, following its global premiere on December 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The picture earned $140 million worldwide thanks to critical acclaim for its performers, direction, and narrative that was centered around music.
