Gemini Introduces New Customisation Tools and Temporary Chats

The Gemini app is receiving major updates to become a more personal, proactive, and powerful AI assistant, while also giving users greater control over their data.

With the latest update, Gemini can now reference past chats to learn user preferences, delivering increasingly personalised responses over time. In addition, a new privacy feature called Temporary Chats has been launched, along with enhanced settings for managing data usage.

Personalised Conversations Through Past Chats

A new setting allows Gemini to remember details and preferences shared in past conversations, enabling more natural and context-aware interactions. For example:

  • If earlier chats explored the evolution of powers in a favourite comic book series, a request for a unique birthday party theme might result in ideas inspired by that character, complete with themed decorations and activities.

  • If book recommendations from BookTok were previously discussed, Gemini might suggest similar titles along with popular quotes for social media posts.

  • If brainstorming for a YouTube channel on Japanese culture took place earlier, Gemini could recommend video ideas such as “My First Time Trying…” featuring Japanese foods, crafts, or games.

This personalised feature is initially available with the 2.5 Pro model in select countries and will expand to the 2.5 Flash model and additional regions in the coming weeks. The setting is enabled by default but can be switched off anytime via Settings → Personal context → Your past chats with Gemini. Conversation history can also be managed or deleted through Gemini Apps Activity.

Temporary Chats for One-Off Conversations

Temporary Chats are designed for quick, private interactions that do not influence future responses. These chats are not saved in recent conversations or Gemini Apps Activity, and they are excluded from personalisation and model training. Data from these chats is retained for up to 72 hours to process responses and feedback.

Improved Data Control Settings

In the coming weeks, the “Gemini Apps Activity” setting will be renamed Keep Activity. When enabled, a sample of future uploads (including files and photos) may be used to improve Google services. Users preferring not to share this data can disable the setting or use Temporary Chats.

Additionally, a recently introduced control allows users to decide whether audio, video, and screen-sharing inputs provided through the mic button or Gemini Live are used to enhance Google services. This setting is disabled by default but can be turned on at any time. More details are available in the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
