Tokon Martial Arts Teach never to give up

A black belt is a white belt who never gave up

“A black belt is a white belt who never gave up” – This quote is framed and strategically positioned at our school for traditional Karate.

I’m sure you’re thinking, what does it even mean? If you’re like most people, you won’t see how inspiring this simple sentence is, and that’s okay.

What if I told you that this sentence is the ultimate key to unlocking your full potential for success?

Before we continue, let me tell you something you’ve probably never heard in your life – You are a genius. It’s not a joke or something to make you feel good about yourself, it’s the truth.

You may not see yourself as one right now, and that’s fine. Maybe at a time when you were younger, someone told you were a genius, and you didn’t believe them. After all, you may not be able to draw anything but a stick figure, and you probably can’t multiply 1234 x 34857 in your head within 5 minutes. Anyway, that’s not what it means to be a genius.

A great deal of research has shown that it takes about 8,000 to 10,000 hours of mastering a task for any random person to become a genius at that task.

So, let’s do some math -a day has 24 hours and a year has 365 days. That means there are 8760 hours in a year.
Let’s dive further into the mystery of the statement “you’re a genius, no matter who you are.”

I want you to think back to when you were a kid, now back further to when you’re a baby. I know you don’t remember anything about that, it’s fine.

As a baby, (maybe cute, maybe not) you just lay there, entirely depending on somebody else to take care of you. As you’ve guessed -far from Genius.

Now think forward to your first birthday (8760 hours of existence), you’ve mastered the act of walking. You’ve developed in that one year enough muscle strength, brainpower, and neuromuscular control to move around without depending on someone or something. You made this happen by focusing all your energy, time, focus and perseverance into this one task you had to learn.

If you’re like most people, that level of Genius was maintained most likely until you were somewhere between 5-7 years old. Now, your coordination improved exponentially, and you learned new vocabularies other than da-da and ma-ma. You begin to understand directions, colors, maybe even a second language (if you hail from a dual language household like my son). On this level, you’ve maintained your naturally-given Genius attitude; that you can and want to learn EVERYTHING!!! At your early stages of life, giving up was NEVER something you understood

Unfortunately, at the age of around 6 or 7, life gradually begins to drop its ‘big lessons’ on you. All of a sudden, there’s a system to follow to ‘succeed in life.’ Parents, school and other influences begin to teach you that failure is a bad thing. Now, you stop trying and learning things that require quality time and don’t show immediate results or pay off right away. Most people gradually lose their genius mindset at this point. It gets to everybody, so it’s not an unfathomable problem.

However, what’s important is that you know you’ve once been a genius, and will always be one. Just because you lost it doesn’t mean you can’t get it back.

Simple, in the very same way you became it. A black belt (10,000-hour genius) is a white belt who never gave up.
