Google Updates Chrome’s Reading Mode on Android

Google has begun introducing a newly redesigned Reading mode in Chrome for Android, offering a cleaner interface and a more comfortable article-reading experience.

The latest update fixes several problems found in the older version, which often behaved inconsistently across websites and relied on a small, easy-to-miss shortcut near the address bar.

In the refreshed layout, the “Show Reading mode” option is now permanently placed inside Chrome’s three-dot menu, positioned just below the “Listen to this page” option.

This change allows users to manually activate Reading mode on most websites. While the previous address bar button has been removed, exiting Reading mode remains quick and simple.

One major improvement is that Reading mode no longer takes up the entire screen. The Omnibox stays visible, and a newly designed bottom sheet appears, built using Google’s Material 3 Expressive design language.

Users can customize their reading experience by adjusting fonts, increasing text size up to 250%, and choosing between light, sepia, or dark background themes. These preferences automatically apply across different pages.

The updated Reading mode has been noticed on select Android devices running Chrome version 143 on the stable channel, though the rollout is currently limited and not yet available to everyone.
