Pensacola International Airport was on target for a record breaking year in 2020. In any case, within a month of the originally affirmed case in Escambia County, the airport’s director says business dropped 92%.

In 2020, the number of travelers were almost cut in half to 1.3 million.

Airport and city leaders trust adding Spirit Airlines will help take those numbers back to normal.

“You can work from almost anywhere, and that’s going to prove out after COVID so much more than anything else. But having a quality airport that has quality airlines that can take you just about anywhere is going to be important for any city,” said Mayor Grover Robinson.

Mayor Robinson says that is particularly the situation as more individuals get immunized.

Thursday’s declaration comes in front of the Panhandle’s busy tourism season.

At the present time, airport authorities say their business is down about 35% percent, however they trust it will increment about 5% into one month from now.

Associations like Visit Pensacola say carrying Spirit Airlines to Pensacola won’t just acquire new guests, yet make going here simpler.

“It’s really a testament to the strength and resiliency of Escambia County’s diversified economy – and that includes a strong tourism destination in Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, and Perdido Key,” said Visit Pensacola CEO and President Darien Schaefer.
