Recommendations prior to an oral surgery intervention

If you have oral surgery, you will have to do a few things before your surgery. Keep these simple steps in mind when preparing for the big day! However, oral surgery interventions are usually outpatient, performed under local anesthesia and, unlike interventions with general anesthesia, do not require the patient to remain in the hospital after the intervention. In fact, the patient only spends a few hours in the facilities before returning home if his sedation is necessary.

Even so, any intervention will require the patient to comply with a series of recommendations that will minimize any type of risk and avoid any type of problem.

General Recommendations

Oral surgery should be performed  in perfect hygienic conditions, for this reason we recommend:

Do a tartrectomy about fifteen days before surgery

The preventive treatment for dental conditions and the most demanded treatment at best dental clinic is dental or teeth purification, also known as prophylaxis or tartrectomy. The plaque or tartar accumulated on the teeth and under the gums must be cleaned. Although the process eliminates surface stains, do not confuse mouth cleaning with teeth whitening treatments. Although the patient maintains proper oral hygiene, the formation of stones in the teeth is inevitable and before an oral surgery it will be essential to perform a deep cleaning that eliminates these formations to avoid possible infections.

Rinse your mouth with a chlorhexidine mouthwash after each meal for 2 or 3 days before surgery.

Chlorhexidine is a disinfectant, antiseptic and used for skin disinfection prior to surgery to sterilize the operative instrument, also called chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG). Chlorhexidine is a bactericidal and fungicidal action disinfectant substance found in the list of essential drugs of the World Health Organization’s health system. These rinses are essential for the patient’s mouth to reach the intervention as clean as possible. The use of chlorexidine can cause a slight brown staining of the teeth if used as a mouthwash for a long time. In the case at hand in which rinses are made only for two or three days, there is no change in color or stains on the teeth and, in case the consumption of red wine, coffee or tea could enhance the Staining process, professional cleaning is enough to return the teeth to their natural state.

Brush your mouth well before going to the appointment to have surgery.

In addition to these dental hygiene recommendations for the days prior to surgery, on the day of the intervention we recommend that you go to the appointment with loose and non-warm clothes. If the upper garments do not cover the arms it will be much more comfortable for you to allow the anesthetist team to do their job (a shirt or tank top is perfect for an intervention) and it is also advisable to avoid garments that compress the neck, waist, etc.

You should not forget in any case to carry with you the day of the intervention the necessary documents and reports, medical reports or other specialists, analytics, medication you are taking at that time and complementary tests such as ECG, MR, CT, etc.) .

Remember that when entering the operating room you will have to leave the people who accompany you with metal objects such as a watch, earrings or bracelets. If you use removable or partial dentures, you should remove it from your mouth and your nails should not be covered with enamels.

INTERVENTIONS WITH LOCAL ANESTHESIA

– The surgery with local anesthesia is ambulatory, that is, when the surgical intervention is finished, you can go home.

– It is better to go accompanied, for your own comfort.

– You do not need to be fasting. You can eat and drink normally and it is recommended that you take a light meal 2 or 3 hours before the surgery.

INTERVENTIONS WITH LOCAL ANESTHESIA AND SEDATION

– The surgery with local anesthesia and sedation is ambulatory that is to say, when the surgery is finished, you will only have to stay a few hours in the recovery room before leaving for your home.

– However, unlike the interventions in which only the patient is given local anesthesia, he or she must attend the intervention, since for a few hours he will not be able to conduct or carry out other activities that may be dangerous.

– In the case of undergoing surgery with local anesthesia and sedation it is also mandatory to be fasting, that is, you cannot eat or drink anything during the 6 hours prior to the intervention.

And calculate that it is possible that there are delays since in the surgical activity it is difficult to calculate the time that an operation lasts so you may leave a little later than you had calculated but, yes, with a new smile.

Care is better than cure, it is better to stop something bad from happening than it is to deal with it after it has happened. If it happened then don’t delay to book an online dentist appointment or contact your family or nearest best dentist to discuss and proper treatment and cure.
