Google Photos Introduces Floating Navigation Bar for Android Users
Google has started rolling out a refreshed interface for Google Photos on Android, introducing a new floating navigation bar designed to improve usability and give users more screen space while browsing their photo libraries.
The update replaces the traditional bottom navigation bar with a floating pill-shaped menu that appears slightly above the bottom edge of the screen. The redesign creates a cleaner appearance and allows more photos to remain visible while navigating through the app.
The new floating bar includes quick access to key sections such as Photos, Collections, and Create, while a dedicated search button on the right provides access to image search features and Google’s AI-powered photo tools.
As part of the redesign, Google has also moved the date indicator into a separate floating element that appears temporarily while users scroll through their images. Those who prefer the previous layout can still enable date labels directly within the photo grid through the app’s settings.
The updated interface follows Google’s broader design direction, with similar floating navigation elements already appearing in several other Google applications. The company aims to create a more modern and visually appealing experience while improving one-handed navigation on larger devices.
The redesign is currently being rolled out gradually through a server-side update and is becoming available to more Android users running recent versions of Google Photos. The floating navigation interface was previously introduced on iOS earlier this year and is now making its way to Android devices worldwide.
Google has not announced an exact timeline for the complete rollout, but availability is expected to expand over the coming weeks.
