Bronx native Andrew Velazquez sparkles in New York Yankees’ spring win

Perceptions from the Yankees’ spring training game Thursday.

Great beginning

Aaron Hicks hit a leadoff homer, sending one out to the opposite field and afterward added a double for his first extra-fair hits of the spring, encouraging the Yankees to a 6-1 success over the Phillies at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater.

Loaisiga shows some glove

Jonathan Loaisiga, hoping to win a spot in the bullpen, thrown three shutout innings and made two incredible defensive plays on hard comebackers.

Caught attention

Bronx native and Fordham Prep graduate Andrew Velazquez had three hits and scored two runs, while playing every one of the nine innings at third base.

Friday’s schedule

Jameson Taillon has been incredible this spring in his rebound from Tommy John surgery and gets his third beginning, this one against the Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland at 1:05 p.m.
