China’s BYD unveiled its affordable electric “Dolphin Surf” car in Berlin on Wednesday, marking the eleventh model available in Europe. Following a strategic redesign, sales in the region are increasing.

The Seal, Sealion 7, Dolphin, and Seal U DM-i are all members of BYD’s Ocean Series of automobiles, which also includes the Dolphin Surf. In just two years, seven new models will be released in the UK, with the new BYD Atto 2 joining the Atto 3 in the current lineup.

Price

The vehicle will be priced at 22,990 euros ($26,100.55) for a range of 322 kilometers and 24,990 euros for a range of 507 kilometers.

Patrick Schulz, the head of sales, said on Wednesday that the three models will be offered at a reduced price of 19,990–24,990 euros until all of June.

The vehicle puts pressure on European automakers to provide more reasonably priced electric alternatives, as the cost of electric vehicles continues to be a significant deterrent to their widespread use.

New Affordable Models in 2025

Though 11 new models priced under 25,000 euros will go on sale this year, including Volkswagen’s (VOWG.DE), opens new tab ID.2, the Renault R5, the Fiat Grand Panda, and the Hyundai Inster, only a small number of models, like the Dacia Spring or Leapmotor’s T03, are currently available in Europe for less than 20,000 euros.

Focus on the Compact Segment

“The compact segment is the next frontier for electrification in Europe,” explained Maria Grazia Davino, who is the regional managing director for markets that include Germany, in Berlin. “We think this market has huge potential.”

BYD Dolphin Surf Features Advanced Battery & Platform

BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 and the company’s blade battery technology, which is integrated into the car’s body for improved safety, will be used in the Dolphin Surf. Although the battery and range have not yet been confirmed, a 38kWh battery with a range of less than 200 miles seems reasonable. According to BYD’s website, a 30-minute fast charge can reach 80 percent at up to 40kW.

Both the exterior and inside have a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, and “Hey BYD” voice control, all of which are influenced by the ocean’s wavy design theme.
