Gemini to Replace Google Assistant on Android in 2026

Gemini to Replace Google Assistant on Android in 2026

Earlier this year, in March, Google announced that Gemini would take over from Google Assistant on Android devices. Initially planned for 2025, this “upgrade” has now been postponed to 2026.

Today, Google shared an update on its plan to “upgrade the Assistant experience to Gemini on most mobile devices by the end of 2025.” The timeline has been adjusted to ensure a “seamless transition” for users.

The process of upgrading Assistant users to Gemini on mobile devices will now extend into 2026, with more details expected in the “coming months.” Once completed, Google Assistant will no longer be available on Android phones and tablets, and the standalone iOS app will also be discontinued.

For now, users can still “Switch to Google Assistant” within the Gemini app, including on the Pixel 10 series. The migration will likely happen gradually rather than all at once, as there isn’t enough time left in 2025 to complete it. Additionally, implementing major changes during the holiday season is often disruptive.

It remains unclear whether Google simply ran out of time to start the migration or if it’s working to integrate more Assistant features into Gemini before moving users over.

Currently, Gemini is available on Wear OS and is gradually rolling out to Google TV and Android Auto. The Gemini for Home Early Access program for smart speakers and displays is also ongoing.

With this, 2026 appears to be the year when Google Assistant will be fully replaced—ironically, a decade after Assistant first launched in 2016.
