Microsoft Teams and Outlook are set to undergo major updates shortly

Recently, it has been reported that Microsoft Teams now features video recaps, enabling users to access AI-generated highlights of recorded meetings, which could save them considerable time. Fortunately, Microsoft is not finished yet and is developing additional features for both Teams and Outlook.

To begin with Teams, Microsoft is revamping the toolbar to enhance customization options. Users will have the ability to pin, unpin, and rearrange controls according to their preferences. Furthermore, Microsoft is consolidating the hand raise control within the reactions section and relocating the ‘Leave’ button to the far-right to avoid accidental clicks. Microsoft indicates that these modifications may initially make Teams ‘feel different,’ but they are intended to enhance speed and usability. This redesign is set to be implemented in June 2026.

Additionally, Teams will introduce an Efficiency Mode that reduces resource consumption by default on devices with limited hardware capabilities, thereby improving overall performance and responsiveness. Microsoft has yet to specify whether this will be a manual toggle or automatically activated for specific devices, but more information will be available when it launches next month.

Other minor enhancements for Teams include breakout rooms accommodating up to 1,000 participants in meetings, the profanity filter being turned off by default for live captions to meet EU regulations, and the capability to report external users for security issues. All these updates are expected to arrive in June 2026.

Shifting focus to Outlook, the service will start displaying Copilot-powered summaries in search results beginning in July 2026. Customers will also have the option to engage in Copilot chat for further discussions based on the search results after selecting this summary card.

Furthermore, if you miss a meeting, you still have the option to follow it via mobile. This will prompt the organizer to record the meeting and provide you with notifications about follow-up items starting June 2026. Another minor update arriving next month will enable users to switch between Copilot-enabled accounts through the Copilot sidepane in Outlook Calendar, eliminating the need to depend on Outlook’s user experience.

  • Access Copilot directly from the file previewer on iOS.
  • Save calendar events as .ics files in the New Outlook for Windows.
  • Preview .ics files while importing them in the New Outlook for Windows.

However, it is important to understand that just because these updates are included in the public Microsoft 365 Roadmap, it does not guarantee that you will receive these features within the specified timelines. In reality, based on feedback and internal testing, Microsoft may opt to cancel any tracked item entirely.
